One of the best things about us is our commitment to compassion and inclusion. Everyone and anyone is welcome at the Mellow Monkey. And it is absolutely true that you do NOT have to be flexible (or skinny, or patient, or vegetarian, or a yogi!) to practice yoga!! Our students are all just normal, everyday Spokane-area people with busy lives, injuries, hip replacements, neck fusions, crazy schedules, chubby bellies. They also have a desire to sleep better, feel better, move better, and add yoga to their lifestyle. So, come on then, let's do some yoga!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: Our instructors are all RYT 200 and beyond (registered with Yoga Alliance). We are all committed to our yoga practices and seek ongoing yoga education and training. See bios below.


Sara Teal

Sara Teal, Owner & Instructor. 

Sara has been teaching yoga since 2003. She teaches several styles of yoga, from flow to gentle, to Yin/Restorative. She has a special knack for working with people one on one. She is a mother of 3 teenagers and has 2 rascally little dogs. Sara's passion is nurturing our yoga community.

Tamara Milliken

Tamara Milliken, Instructor. Tamara has been teaching at the Monkey since our early days in Millwood. She teaches incredible Yoga for Well Being classes, with a strong emphasis on yoga philosophy. Tam is also known for her beautiful chanting voice.


Lacy Gannon

Lacy Gannon, Instructor.

Teaching at the Monkey since the start, Lacy is infamous for her Sunrise Yoga classes. Her commitment and attention to such an early-morning group has drawn a dedicated crowd. Lacy is also a personal trainer and is one of the owners of SUP Spokane.


Mary Steilen

Mary Steilen, Instructor. 

Mary has proven herself to be compassionate and knowledgable with an impressive attention to detail. Mary has used yoga in her own life to alleviate aches and pains from recreational running. Mary teaches Gentle & Flow Yoga, and you'll find her on our afternoon & evening schedule.


April Ponikvar

April has been teaching and practicing yoga in Spokane for 19 years. Her own life has benefited from a varying practicing between Ashtanga yoga and flow yoga. She focuses on the roots or foundations of yoga and brings these elements into every class. With a strong understanding of fundamentals she leads her students from the basics of posture and breath all the way into more dynamic variations.

Mary Lee McJimsey

Mary Lee has been practicing yoga since a very serious illness turned her life upside down. She has found both physical and mental health benefits from her practice. As a high school teacher & ballet teacher, she naturally felt called to teach and share yoga and its benefits with our yoga community.

Sara Murphy

Sara Murphy has been a popular Monkey teacher for many years. She is known for her fun, playful classes, and her ability to make her classes accessible to all levels. She is our Saturday morning teacher, which seems to be a studio favorite. Sara is also one of the owners of SUP Spokane.
